Statement
Gen enjoys working with both digital and analogue methods to meet outcomes whether it be through Adobe software, collage, or editing imagery. Experimenting with screen print is also another interest of Gen’s, as again, there is so much that can be done with it and the outcomes are always different as the smallest of changes can be made. These processes appeal to Gen because lots of textures, shapes and colours can be experimented with as well as thinking about how the outcomes can meet the brief and be presented either physically or digitally.
While studying at The Northern School of Art, Gen has been experimenting with a variety of processes and briefs. Examples of these are live briefs from the D&AD New Blood Awards where she chose to create a campaign for Nike to encourage teenage girls in London to share their own Nike style which would complement the existing app that it would go into. Additionally, she worked on a campaign for Penguin to persuade school aged children to read more and to share more about what their opinions are about the language, author or theme of the books that they read.
For the final project, doing a sustainable brand seemed current due to more information and changes being made to improve the environment, businesses and people's habits. Gen also experimented with horoscopes to the brand's appeal because the TA - students/YA are becoming more interested in this and this was a way to gain their interest and knowledge.
This was a good way to push experimentation in terms of research and own designs to see how it would work digitally and physically as the brand needed to be something different in comparison to the larger coffeehouses that would stand out. The brand ‘Arise’ is a sustainable coffee subscription service aimed at students/young adults . Each package is suited to the customers requirements so there is minimal waste, along with offers to appeal to people shown through social media, website pages displayed through using mockups and notes that would be included inside the box.The sustainable research was important and there are so many alternatives that can be used for printing the design onto the boxes and packaging materials. Inside the box was another consideration so there would be coloured paper as well as a sticker sealing this which had the brands logo on it. This was a good way to push thinking into what would get the audience's attention and how this could be presented in a simple yet effective way.
After finishing university Gen would like to find full time employment in graphic design potentially working in-house as a team meaning her skills and ideas can be developed and pushed. An alternative would be looking into an Masters course as this has its benefits of pushing skills, learning more and working more closely with other people in the creative industries which would be interesting to see how others work and ideas come together.
